LPG energy (Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Liquid Petroleum Gas) is a mixture of butane and propane, which is produced during oil refining or is extracted during the natural gas production process.

Yes, we currently offer 48kg, 19kg, 14kg, 9kg, 6kg and 5kg cylinders.

LPG is a hydrocarbon, so just like petrol and diesel, the price of gas will change monthly.

No deposit required if you already have an empty cylinder. You will swop your empty cylinder for a filled cylinder that has been refilled under correct standards.
A deposit is required if you do not have a previously owned or loaned cylinder.

Please note: Currently we do not offer refills. Please refill at a certified gas refill station under correct standards. A filling option will be available at our premises from Monday, 01 October 2018.

Our 5kg, 9kg, 14kg, 19kg and 48kg cylinders are the property of Afrox and loaned to users, therefore a deposit is required.
You will be refunded when the cylinder is returned, if no longer used.

For the 48kg, 19kg, 14kg, 9kg and 5kg cylinders, both our cylinder deposit and monthly gas price include VAT.
For the 6kg cylinder the price excludes VAT.

Someone who is registered with the LPGSASA (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa) must install your gas for you.
All registered gas installers have a card with a registration number on it. Ask to see their card and write down their registration number before they install your cylinder.

Please note: There are certified gas installers for domestic, commercial and industrial installations. Please make sure you are contacting the right installer for where you want to install your gas.

There are strict laws that determine the maximum amount of gas you are able to store in a home - 19 kg in a house and 9 kg in a flat.
Your cylinder should be installed in your home by a registered gas installer under the correct standards.

Once installed by a professional, LPG can be used for:

• More than 1m from doors and windows
• More than 3m’s below windows (unless there’s a non-combustible roof)
• More than 1m from the property boundary wall (unless it’s a fire wall)
• More than 5m’s away from a plug
• Light bulbs must be more than 1.5 metres above a gas bottle
• There should be a 6mm gap under the doors in the room where your gas appliances are being used
• There should be openings made at the bottom of the kitchen cupboard door where your cylinder is being kept
• There should be a 300mm space between the cylinder and the stove in your kitchen

No, cylinders should be kept upright on a flat surface and not lying down. This is done to avoid spills and leaks.

The red seal of safety indicates two important things:

1. Your cylinder is 100% correctly filled and 100% safe
2. You are avoiding the risk of buying illegally filled cylinders

If there is a strong smell in your house, open all your doors and windows, turn off the cylinder, and take it outside if possible. Once the smell is gone, bring the cylinder back to us and we will get a professional to look at it.

The empty weight is on the cylinder’s neck. You can then disconnect your cylinder and put it on a scale to see how empty it is (Tare mass + Filled mass = Gross mass)

The flame must be a blue colour. If there are yellow or orange flames, it is likely that your equipment requires cleaning, the jet requires replacement or the air/gas ratio is incorrect. Please consult a professional in this regard.

• Only purchase Afrox branded cylinders with the red seal of safety
• Transport your cylinder upright and not on its side
• Use the gas in a well ventilated area
• Be sure to frequently smell for gas leaks
• No open flames or smoking in your cylinder storage area.

Some wise tips:

• Defrost your food before you cook it
• Use dark pots and trays when cooking
• Try and cook all your food at the same time
• Bigger pots need more energy for cooking, try use a smaller pot when you can
• Put a lid on your pots when cooking, it can save up to 4 times more energy

A more comprehensive cost comparison will follow on this page regarding LPG vs PARAFFIN at a later stage. For the reader it is important to note that VAT is not charged on Paraffin. There are however significant benefits to LPG when compared to Paraffin:

• Burning LPG in a home is cleaner and healthier than burning paraffin. This implies a health benefit to users of LPG when compared to Paraffin – as Paraffin can cause respiratory issues
• LPG is packaged in a way that does not allow users easy access to the fuel, so the possibility of accidental spillage is lesser than paraffin usage. Many Paraffin spillages occur, resulting in fires and injuries
• LPG cannot be swallowed. Paraffin however have many reported incidents where children consume the liquid (normally ‘’packaged’’ in a bottle that may look like cold drink)
• In the event of fire, users can move the LPG cylinder to avoid further damage. Paraffin cannot be easily moved as it spills easily
• Paraffin spills easier than LPG, making it more unreliable
• If an LPG cylinder burner does not work properly, it does not lead to a high-energy release like paraffin burners
• Much like LPG, the paraffin industry also have illegal traders - contaminated or impure paraffin can cause an increase in harmful emissions, which could result in serious health problems
• LPG burns cleaner than paraffin. This implies obvious environmental benefits.

For reasons that are too many to mention, the current perception is that electricity is cheaper than LPG. The realistic answer is that it depends what the consumer pays for the LPG. Besides the increased efficiencies which LPG brings (time it takes to reach optimum cooking temperatures) and the origin of electricity primarily coal driven, the below example illustrates that LPG can be cheaper if the correct supplier is chosen:

• 1kg LPG = 13.92kw/h (of energy)
• Average price of domestic electricity is R1.40 / kwh
• Cost of 13.92kwh is R1.40 x 13.92kwh = R19.49

Therefore as at August 2018, so long as the consumer pays less than R19.49/kg including Vat per kg of LPG, LPG will be cheaper. This equates to R16.95/kg LPG excluding Vat. Both electricity and LPG share a pricing mechanism disadvantage, both of which need to be factored when a pricing decision is made:

• Electricity increases on average double digits annually
• LPG is subject to R/$ fluctuations and the oil price.
